Her Excellency the President of Malta, Myriam Spiteri Debono, welcomed the athletes of Special Olympics Malta at San Anton Palace, as the voluntary organisation commemorates its 25th year anniversary since its founding. Her Excellency was accompanied by the President of Special Olympics Malta, Dr Lydia Abela, as well as the National Director, Ms Anna Calleja.
Addressing the athletes, the President described them as an example of courage and resilience, thanked them for their contribution to the country and society, and encouraged them to look ahead with confidence and positivity, and to be active citizens. The President also thanked the Special Olympics Malta Committee, and the volunteers who assist the athletes, for their dedication.
In her address, the President of Special Olympics Malta, Dr Lydia Abela, emphasised that this year the organisation is not only commemorating past achievements and memories, but above all reflecting on the Maltese nation’s collective journey towards greater inclusion, dignity, and respect for persons with intellectual disabilities.
Dr Abela stated: “On behalf of more than 2,500 athletes, Special Olympics Malta expresses its deep gratitude to the State and to the people of Malta and Gozo for their continued support of our mission – that of supporting the holistic development of persons with intellectual disabilities, both in terms of physical health and mental wellbeing.”
Dr Abela also reaffirmed the ongoing commitment of Special Olympics Malta to support athletes in the area of mental health, and announced that this year will see the launch of a specialised new programme titled “Strong Minds,” aimed at providing mental health support during the athletes’ sporting development.
