BEYOND THE WAVE

The competition gets underway as delegations from across Europe Eurasia and beyond arrive in Malta. Athletes take to the water for official training sessions from 09:00 to 13:00, settling into the venue and fine-tuning their form ahead of the days of competition to come. Away from the pool, the experience extends well beyond competition: the Healthy Athletes Programme opens its doors from 09:00 to 14:00, offering free health screenings across mental health, hearing, vision, dental care, fitness and foot health, while the Sports Village comes alive over the same hours with Unified Sports activities that bring athletes, partners and visitors together. It is a day of settling in, warming up, and feeling the first energy of an international community gathering as one.

Friday brings the all-important divisioning rounds, running from 09:00 to 14:00. Far more than warm-up swims, these preliminary races are the heart of what makes Special Olympics competition fair: athletes are grouped by ability so that everyone races against others of similar speed, and every heat across the finals weekend becomes a genuine contest. Around the pool, the Healthy Athletes Programme and the Sports Village both continue from 09:00 to 14:00, keeping the venue buzzing with free health screenings, Unified Sports and the easy camaraderie that defines these Games. As evening falls, the competition is formally declared open. The Opening Ceremony begins at 18:30, bringing every delegation together under one roof to celebrate the athletes at the centre of it all. It is a moment of colour, pride and shared purpose, the spark that carries the spirit of Beyond The Wave into the days of racing ahead.

Race day arrives. From 09:00 to 14:00 the National Pool Complex turns competitive in earnest, as athletes take to the water in the first day of finals across the 13 swimming events. Months of training meet the moment here, the starts, the turns, the final strokes to the wall. The Healthy Athletes Programme and Sports Village run alongside from 09:00 to 14:00, so there is energy in every corner of the venue, in and out of the pool. Beyond the racing, the day reaches into the heart of Malta itself. Athletes, families and delegations are welcomed to a special cultural event set against the backdrop of one of the island's most historic locations, a place of honey-coloured stone, ancient streets and centuries of history. It is a chance to step away from the lane ropes, experience Maltese heritage and hospitality, and forge the friendships across nations that make these Games about so much more than results.

The final day of racing carries the highest stakes and the loudest cheers. From 09:00 to 14:00 the last of the finals play out across the 13 swimming events, as athletes leave everything in the water and the results of the weekend take their final shape. Every touch of the wall matters, and the poolside atmosphere builds with each race toward its crescendo. As ever, the Healthy Athletes Programme and Sports Village run alongside from 09:00 to 14:00, rounding out a venue that has pulsed with activity from morning to night all week. The competition closes as it opened, together. The Closing Ceremony begins at 18:30, a celebration of every athlete, coach, volunteer and family that made the Games possible. It is a moment to honour the achievements of the week, to mark the friendships forged across more than forty nations, and to send everyone home carrying the spirit of Beyond The Wave far past Malta's shores.
