
World Games 2023 | Berlin

At the 2023 Special Olympics World Games in Berlin, held from June 17 to 25, Special Olympics Malta achieved a historic milestone by securing a record 16 gold medals, the highest ever for the nation at these Games. The Maltese delegation, comprising 22 athletes and five unified partners, competed across seven disciplines: athletics, bocce, bowling, cycling, swimming, golf, and table tennis. Their collective efforts culminated in a total of 32 medals—16 gold, 11 silver, and 5 bronze.
Notable performances included cyclist Gareth Borg and bowler Luke Burke, each clinching three gold medals. The athletics relay team, featuring Anne Marie Bugeja, Jake Gatt, Naomi Axisa, and Matthew Bugeja, triumphed in the X05 level A class . Beyond sports, Maltese athletes participated in the Global Youth Leadership Summit and the Global Athletes Congress, sharing experiences and advocating for inclusivity.
