In October 2007, Special Olympics Malta proudly took part in the Special Olympics World Summer Games held in Shanghai, China. This global event brought together over 7,500 athletes from more than 160 countries, making it one of the largest sporting celebrations of inclusion and ability ever held.

The Maltese delegation, made up of dedicated athletes, coaches, and volunteers, represented the nation with pride, competing in athletics, bocce, swimming, and table tennis. Each athlete demonstrated incredible determination, resilience, and sportsmanship—qualities at the heart of the Special Olympics movement.

The 2007 Games also marked a significant moment in the global recognition of people with intellectual disabilities, with high-profile opening and closing ceremonies and strong media coverage. Malta’s participation reaffirmed its place in this global movement, dedicated to empowering athletes through sports and promoting respect and equality.
