Special Olympics Malta is proud to announce that athlete and artist Rachel Chircop has collaborated with renowned artist Tom Geleb to create the artwork Unified Embrace, which is being exhibited as part of "Art for Everyone and with Everyone", a project organised by MEP Chiara Gemma and currently on display at the European Parliament in Brussels.
The exhibition is founded on the values of unity, equality, and human dignity, highlighting the belief that diversity does not divide society but strengthens it. It creates a shared space where voices that are often overlooked are given visibility, recognition, and respect.
Unified Embrace portrays two symbolic human figures. One figure, rendered in intricate black linework, represents the complex challenges, struggles, and emotional weight often experienced by persons with intellectual disabilities. This figure appears introspective and burdened, holding the world delicately and symbolising both vulnerability and responsibility.
Opposite this figure is a second, brightly coloured form, painted in flowing rainbow tones. This figure represents hope and courage, reaching forward with the Special Olympics symbol held within a ball, symbolising the impact Special Olympics has on millions of individuals with intellectual disabilities around the world. The contrast between monochrome and colour reflects the journey from struggle to empowerment, connection, and belonging.
For Rachel, the artwork is deeply personal. It reflects her own lived experiences, including moments shaped by anxiety, as well as the sense of freedom and confidence she finds when she is in her safe space. As a Special Olympics Health Messenger, Rachel also sees the colourful figure as a reflection of her role in offering encouragement and hope to others, reminding them that they are not alone.
Addressing distinguished guests at the exhibition, Rachel shared a powerful message:
“Our true colours are beautiful, and we must have the courage to see the true colours in each other.”
She concluded by reminding everyone that each of us has the ability to shape and uplift one another, becoming artists in each other’s lives through understanding, inclusion, and compassion.
Special Olympics Malta would like to express its appreciation to MEP Chiara Gemma, who is also a member of the Intergroup on Disability, for the opportunity and platform given to our athletes.
