At the 2019 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Abu Dhabi, held from March 14 to 21, Special Olympics Malta delivered an outstanding performance, securing a total of 40 medals: 12 gold, 13 silver, and 15 bronze. The Maltese delegation, comprising 28 athletes, competed in various disciplines, including athletics, swimming, bocce, bowling, cycling, gymnastics, golf, and table tennis.
Notable achievements included Gozitan swimmer Maria Pia Saliba clinching gold in the 25m butterfly, and athlete Ann Ebejer winning the 200m race. The Unified Bowling team, consisting of Peter Mallia, Philip Gruppetta, Amanda Cini, and Jessica Farrugia, also secured a gold medal. Cyclists Carmelo Pace and Giuseppina Galea made history by winning gold in the 2km time trial, marking Malta's debut in cycling at the Games.
The athletes' success was the result of 18 months of intensive training under the guidance of coaches and support from organizations like the Marigold Foundation. Their achievements not only showcased their talent but also highlighted Malta's commitment to inclusivity and the empowerment of individuals with intellectual disabilities through sport.
