In June 2011, Special Olympics Malta proudly participated in the Special Olympics World Summer Games held in Athens, Greece—the birthplace of the Olympic movement. The event brought together over 7,000 athletes with intellectual disabilities from 180 countries, celebrating inclusion, athletic achievement, and the unifying power of sport.

The Maltese delegation, made up of 27 athletes, competed in a variety of disciplines, including athletics, aquatics, bocce, bowling, and football. With months of dedicated training behind them, the athletes arrived in Greece full of enthusiasm, ready to represent their country with pride and determination.

Throughout the Games, Team Malta showcased extraordinary talent, sportsmanship, and courage. Their efforts resulted in an impressive medal haul, including gold, silver, and bronze medals across several events. More importantly, the athletes achieved personal bests, overcame challenges, and demonstrated the core values of the Special Olympics movement—respect, inclusion, and perseverance.
